Finally, Supernatural returned this week. After the CW’s awful decision to postpone the return of Smallville and Supernatural for Thursday repeats, both shows began their second half, and what a start it was for Supernatural.
After Death put Sam’s soul back into his body, it was taking a while for him to wake up. Castiel told Dean he wasn’t sure that Sam would ever wake up, but he did. The brothers had their typical emotional hug and it was on to this weeks hunt.
It was an interesting case to say the least. For the first time in the show’s history, they dealt with dragons. Yes, dragons. While we didn’t actually see the true form of the beasts, they were dragons nonetheless.
Anyway, Sam and Dean were told by a survivor that a big bat had attacked her and that she was a virgin. So, these dragons were attacking virgins and we also found out that they stole gold as well.
So, they had to find a way to defeat the big bats, and Bobby told Dean that there was a doctor who could help.
This women doctor, who seemed to have had a history with Bobby, told Dean he needed a certain rare sword to defeat the dragon. Luckily, she happened to have one of the rare swords in her possession. This led to possibly the funniest moment of the season and it was certainly a Dean classic.
He had to try and pull the sword out of a piece of rock, just like you might see in a Zelda game or when King Arthur pulled Excalibur out from the stone, but he couldn’t.
The epic music was playing, he had a great smirk on his face, but as much as he tried, he couldn’t get it out. So, he decided to blow the rock up and just take the sword that way.
In the end, there were two dragons in human form, and the brothers killed one, but one of them got away. This is when the episode went from good to great.
Bobby found out some interesting things about the dragons and what they were doing with the virgins.
Apparently, they were trying to release something from purgatory. They needed a spell and a virgin, and since they had those things, they were able to release the creature, “Mother of All.â€
I can maybe guess that she might be the mother of all monsters, which could be confirmed from the alpha vampire who said that they all have a mother, but it may be too early to tell.
However, the brothers now have a new big baddie to deal with and hopefully she can live up to the great villains of the shows past.
The only part of the episode I haven’t discussed is Dean trying to keep Sam from the truth about what he did for a year and a half.
He wanted to keep Sam from knowing because it could bring up memories or cause him to remember Hell, and although I would have liked to have seen him tell Sam the truth all along, I got where he was coming from.
However, Castiel ended up telling him everything and Sam apologized to Dean about his soulless body.
This was an excellent way to start the second half of season six. It was a good old-fashioned hunt, it had some great humor, and that ending made it one of the best this season.
Another great thing about this episode was that it brought back some classic rock, which has been missing lately. The “road so far” montage featured Aerosmith’s “Back in the Saddle.” It wasn’t the best opening of the show, but it was great to have some rock and roll back in the show.
This season has been much better than I thought it would be and I can’t wait to see what happens next.
College Couch Potato Grade: A
Liked this episode, but liked last nights even better. The ending with Sam having some sort of episode and his face on fire like that may lead to soooo many things. Can’t wait to see it.
Supernatural is one of my “must see” shows. I loved this episode. What a cliff hanger!
