First it was Mayor Virg Bernero’s friend Tina Houghton who was outed for failing to pay more than $3,600 in back taxes, even though she had certified that she was up to date when she filed the paperwork for her successful bid for Lansing City Council. Lansing City Pulse followed up on the Houghton scandal with a recent article listing other local officials on boards and commissions who were delinquent on various tax bills.
But the record clearly goes to another Bernero crony - the Lansing State Journal reports that Charles L. Moore, Mayor Virg Bernero’s treasurer for his run to become Michigan’s governor, owes a whopping $91,000 in back property taxes on 24 parcels in Ingham County.
While the LSJ article lists Moore as the head of C. L. Moore Properties LLC, a Google search shows that Moore also appears to have a website where he lists himself as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) through his enterprise called Charles L. Moore & Associates. The site states that Moore served as an auditor for the Michigan Department of Commerce and the Lansing School District. (Isn’t this beginning to sound like a Jon Stewart “Daily Show” skit?)
LSJ reports that Bernero campaign spokesperson Jamaine Dickens paints Moore as yet another victim of Michigan’s struggling economy, echoing the same defense Ms. Houghton used.
Do you feel their pain?
MY QUESTION: Is failing to pay your taxes becoming a requirement for everyone involved in politics here? Or does that only apply to Mayor Bernero’s friend, associates and campaign cronies?
And do you really expect this crew to feel similar compassion for you if hard times forces you into arrears?
