The Event: Pilot Review
It’s finally here. The show that has been so over-advertised that it almost made me not want to watch it.
I am, of course, talking about The Event, and I have to say that the pilot has me intrigued. This may be the best pilot of the fall season so far (and that includes Boardwalk Empire).
Unlike Boardwalk Empire, which most people agree will be a great show, The Event might go the way that Flashforward did last year. Both shows promised to be the next Lost, but Flashforward flopped.
Based on the pilots alone, The Event seems to be the show with more promise. It stars Jason Ritter as Sean Walker, an everyday guy who gets caught up in the event when his girlfriend Leila mysteriously disappears during a vacation.
Although Leila is tagged as a main character, we did not learn much about her during this episode. The other main character from Leila’s family is Michael, who is her father and an airline pilot. We are also introduced to Simon Lee , played by Ian Anthony Dale, a CIA operative who works with an underground division that handles security issues related to detainees.
Sophia Maguire, played by Laura Innes, is the leader and spokesperson of the underground division, which is located in Mount Inostranka. The President is Elias Martinez, played by Blair Underwood.
The president was kept out of the loop about this facility, and he plans to shut it down. However, he is getting a lot of scrutiny from his National Intelligence Director, Blake Sterling, played by Ivanek Zelijko, who wants to keep the facility open.
The pilot episode was the most anticipated new show of the year. I found it mysterious, intriguing, and thrilling at times. At this point, it is still unclear what the event is, but it seems like they are going to build up to it and probably make it some sort of cliffhanger.
This show contains many shifts in time, which I did not find all that appealing, and I hope that they tone these down in future episodes. I don’t mind showing the viewer something that happened prior to the present, but this show did that throughout the entire episode.
It can be hard to follow, but as long as you pay attention, you should be fine. The acting was good, the crazy twists were great, and if you can keep up with the many time shifts, you will be rewarded in a very good way.
College Couch Potato Grade: B+
Just ok so far for me. Shows like this could go either way. Depends on how creative (within the realm of reality) that the writers are.
I liked the time shifts I thought it added to the mystery of it all. The scene on the cruise was great how scary was that.I’m looking forward to next week! Thx
Ooohhh. I was actually told I really need to see this by a couple other people and based on this review it will be one I make sure to catch from now on, see I missed the pilot and so never thought anything of it. Thanks so much for the review.
This show does seem over advertised like you said. i decided not to watch it and doesn’t sound like my kind of show. Ty for the review!
I was waiting for this show and it kind of fell short for me, but only slightly. Kind of like the last season of House, I watched but was waiting for something more.
Great review! I thought the show was pretty good! I look forward to reading more of your reviews on this show! =)
