Some of the best shows in the recent past have been legal dramas. Shows such as: Boston Legal, the Law and Order series, and The Practice. Well, if the pilot of Outlaw is any indication, it will never get close to being mentioned with those shows ever again.
The show stars Cyrus Garza, played by Jimmy Smits, who is a conservative Supreme Court justice who decides that is it time to change how the legal system works. We learn that him and his father were in a car crash, and his father died.
His father had been disapproving of his actions, as he is a major gambler and has relations with many women, and so he decides it is time to step down from the Supreme Court and be the lawyer who helps the wrongfully accused.
That was the first problem with this show. In what world would being a lawyer help his chances of fixing the system? When he was a judge, he had tons of power, but he reduced himself into being just some random lawyer. He is not alone, however, as he has a team of uninteresting characters who I couldn’t care less about.
We have Lucinda Pearl, played by Carly Pope, who is a private investigator that tries to be quirky and thinks everyone wants to have sex with her, but she is just rude. Next we have his loyal law clerk, Mereta Sprows played by Ellen Woglom, who is just plain annoying.
At one point, she overhears a conversation between Cyrus and his bookie, Doc, as they are discussing how he only has three months left to pay his debts. They were using code, and it seemed like they meant he only had three months to live, so she ends up confessing her love for him.
In the first episode of the series, we get a love confession! They didn’t even give us enough time to try and care about any of the characters, not that any more time would have helped.
Garza’s second law clerk is Eddie Franks, played by Jesse Bradford, who finished first in his class at Yale. However, he is dull and seemed very uninterested to help the team out. The last member of the team is Al Druzinsky, played by David Ramsay, who is a defense attorney that is actually somewhat of a decent character.
So, now that we have met the team, lets get to the first case. A man was falsely accused of murdering a female police officer eleven years previous and is about to get the death penalty unless some random Supreme Court justice can step in. So, Garza and his crew set out to free the innocent man and get justice for this awful crime.
Much of the episode revolves around the group sitting around trying to figure out how to set this man free. In the end, the good guys win and set the innocent man free to be with his family once again. I did like that part, but overall, this show is just poor.
I think the worst thing is Cyrus. How did he ever get to the Supreme Court? He did seem pretty intelligent, but for him to be the immature player that he is, he should have never gotten a job as a judge on the Supreme Court. Another problem of his is that he wants to choose his own cases, and he wants to do them all over the country.
Well, if he wants to do cases all over the United States, he would have to have passed the bar exam for each state and something tells me that he hasn’t done that.
So, there are other complaints that I have with this show, but I will stop with that one. This show has uninteresting characters, a main character that stepped down from his high-powered job (that he never should have had) in order to do things that he can never do, unless he had a lot of power, and it is show that I do not recommend to anyone.

Awesome review!! This show had to be one of the worst pilots I have ever seen. Never did care much for Jimmy Smits. Probably a good actor, but they always try to make him out to be a savior to do the downtrodden type of guy who just happens to be crazy hot. Very annoying!!
You’re right it just didn’t make sense?? They always try to make Smits a playboy if they would just let him act. Let him be…a judge,a lawyer whatever. He is capable of so much more than this. Good review. Thx
