An international award recognizing contributions to Gandhian values outside of India has been awarded to Michigan Peace Team’s Father C. Peter Dougherty by the Jamnalal Bajaj Foundation of Mumbai, India.
The International Award for Promoting Gandhian Values Outside India carries a citation, a beautiful trophy, and a cash prize of 500,000 rupees (approximately $10,000 USD). It has been given every year since 1988 to a non-Indian citizen for promoting Gandhian values by promoting peace and harmony among all people and nations through the application of the principles of truth and non-violence; ending exploitation in any form and seeking solutions through Gandhian principles and constructive programs; and demonstrating innovative work in social organizations through the promotion of Gandhian values of fostering community, self-reliance, and bringing about harmony of human life with nature.
Previous recipients of this award include Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa and Dr. Daisaku Ikeda of Japan.
“I’m honored and humbled,” said Dougherty, co-founder of Michigan Peace Team. This is an incredible privilege; and that it comes from such an honorable organization, with such an honorable history, means all that much more.”
This is wonderful! It’s wonderful to hear some good news about a Lansing area leader. Congratulations! This is a remarkable and well-deserved honor.
