He brought his shotgun and she her military assault-style weapon
Gun advocates nationwide held local events to protest efforts to pass new gun control legislation, and this intrepid reporter took video at the rally at the Capitol in Lansing where a number of participants exercised their right to carry “open carry.”
As the video shows, I did not let their eagerness to exercise their Second Amendment rights to stop me from challenging people who are visibly armed to the teeth. They say that an armed society is a polite society, but not in my case apparently.
The December shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, has led to a national call to action to deal with gun violence. Young Adam Lanza used a Bushmaster like the one the young man in this video was carrying to kill 26 people, including 20 six- and seven-year olds.
U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) plans to introduce a bill that would ban military-style assault weapons. Earlier in the week, President Barack Obama announced 23-point plan to deal with such violence.
At the Capitol, many of the mostly white male supporters expressed their fears that the government is “coming for their guns.” Some showed their support for the militias referenced in the Second Amendment. A number of them vowed to defy any federal order to confiscate their guns (though none is planned), and all vowed to fight for their right to own any firearm of their choice.
