The Defenders {Nevada v. Wayne}

By Frank Feska on January 14, 2011

I hope everyone had a good holiday. The New Year is still fresh, and TV has wasted no time with many shows having already returned, including the improved Defenders.

When I first reviewed the show, I criticized the fact that it didn’t take advantage of Las Vegas. However, they have used Vegas a lot since then, and it has evolved into a consistently good law drama.

This week had Pete and Nick separated once again. The few times they were on a case together for the full episode, it was great, but they haven’t done it very much. Nick tried to defend a young man who was being accused of sexual assault, while Pete had jury duty.

It’s funny how a lawyer is on the jury. I am sure it happens, but I haven’t seen it on TV before. Pete was funny a few times, as he tried to flirt with one of the women on the jury and didn’t react to an emotional testimony because he knew it was a strategy.

Nick, on the other hand, had a much more serious case. He represented a young man he had known for years and the character was rather unlikeable. He used to be addicted to heroin, and then we find out that he actually raped the young woman.

Toward the end of the episode, he tells Nick that he did it. For the rest of the episode, he was a total jerk, saying, “Just do your job” over and over again.

They ended up convicting him and giving our heroes their first loss of the entire series. I was glad that they did lose. Nobody is perfect and it would have been unrealistic if they won every single time.

Either way, justice was served and that punk went away for a while. Pete ended his story by convincing the other jury members to convict. It must have been hard considering he is a defense attorney, but he didn’t complain.

This week’s episode was another good one, as Pete and Nick continue to be likable and take cases that are at least somewhat interesting.

This show will probably never win any awards, and it probably won’t get too dramatic, but it shouldn’t. It is meant to be a more comedic type of law show that mostly delivers on what it promises.

Unfortunately, it is going on anther short break, but it will return on its new night, Friday, February 4.
