Miguel Cabanas
Local musician Miguel Cabanas enchanted the audience at the Creole Gallery, performing his own songs and those of folk artists such as the Chilean poet Victor Jara.
Cabanas opened the show with two of his own songs, sung in Spanish - ‘Ganas de amar’ and ‘Quiero andar.’ (He provided a handout with translations for the audience.)
He also surprised the audience with a tender rendition of Michael Jackson’s ‘Man in the Mirror.’ (It was the first time in a long time that anyone made me think of Jackson as a lonely fellow human being and not a celebrity.)
Ten Pound Fiddle is spreading its wings, hosting shows in new venues such as the Creole Gallery. Despite the gale-force winds raging outside, the twin-bill show [also featuring Wildflower recording artist Ralston Bowles with Drew (Cap’n Midnite) Howard] attracted a full house. Victor Jara was a Chilean revolutionary who was assassinated in the infamous soccer stadium massacre in 1973 that took place during the military coup that brought General Augusto Pinochet to power. Jara was among many followers of democratically elected President Salvador Allende who were tortured and then put to death in the aftermath of the U.S.-backed coup.
