Has anyone ever wondered what would happen if the Titanic didn’t sink? Well, Supernatural answered that question in one of the most unique episodes of the series.
It begins as the brothers are concerned about Bobby. He gets mad at them for worrying and then tells them to leave. This is where the episode just went off the tracks.
As they leave the house, they get in a mustang and take off. That was weird enough. But then, something even crazier happens. Ellen shows up at Bobby’s house and it turns out that they are married!
For anyone who forgot, Ellen and Jo were two of the biggest supporting characters on the show and were killed off in season 5. Anyway, this had me shocked beyond belief.
My jaw was on the floor while I waited to see what was going on. Finally, we get a classic explanation. Balthazar went back in time to save the Titanic. Wow. Only on Supernatural could a random thing like that occur.
He tells the brothers that he hated the movie and the famous song by Celine Dion. However, with the Titanic not sinking, Dion never became famous and some details were changed.
For instance, Ellen and Jo are alive, Dean drives a mustang, and 50,000 extra souls are walking around.
But, those 50,000 souls brought about the creature of the week. Fate. Yes, one of the fate sisters herself. She was taking done those souls one by one and the brothers tried to stop her.
The interesting thing is that she can stop time and move things in their rightful spot so that the person will die as they are supposed to.
Anyway, they didn’t realize that while they were dodging fate throughout all of season 5, they put her out of a job. Due to the big fight not happening between Lucifer and Michael, she is no longer working.
That doesn’t stop her from using her powers though, and because the brothers are responsible for her unemployment, she is out for revenge. They find out about this and realize that they could die (again) at any moment.
Fate stops time, gets close to killing them, but just as she is about to, Castiel shows up. We find out that Balthazar was sent back by Castiel’s orders to save the Titanic. Those extra 50,000 souls would be very handy for them to use in Heaven’s war.
That was an interesting turn and although it was a small move forward, it prevented the episode from being just a filler.
Anyway, she said that she would spare the brothers if they fix what they did. So, the Titanic ended up sinking and everything was back to normal.
This was a very fun episode and certainly something different and unique. I also am starting to like Balthazar a lot. He is quite funny and he gets better and better each time he shows up.
Also, something else to note are the deaths. In this episode we had a garage door decapitate someone and we had a person who was hanged by a copier. That was probably one of the most classic death scenes ever.
You certainly don’t see things like that every day. You also don’t get shows like Supernatural every day either.
College Couch Potato Grade: B+
B+?? I think that this may be the first time I would give Supernatural a higher rating than you do. Really liked this episode. Very interesting how the fact that those people didn’t die changed SO MANY lives. Good stuff.
