Dean promised that he would kill his grandfather if he ever saw him again, there was nothing but absolute seriousness from soulless Sam, and Castiel killed a certain bad guy with no hesitation.
While I stated in my last review that “Clap your hands if you believe” was the best episode of the season, I think this episode was the best dramatic episode of the season. Sure, there was some great comedy throughout, but overall, this episode was serious.
We began with Crowley interrogating a shapeshifter about pergatory. After that, we see the brothers taking a monster to “demon extras,” as dean called them. Afterward, they go back to their room and, surprise, Meg shows up.
Yeah, she’s the demon from season one who also used hell hounds to kill Ellen and Jo last season. She is back and wants to kill Crowley. Sam tells her that they will lead her to him if she can get something from him. That would be Sam’s soul, but he doesn’t tell her that. This leads to the brothers getting help from is.
This is where the first twist in the episode occurs. We have known for a few episodes now that Samuel has been working for Crowley for some reason, but we didn’t know why. Turns out it’s because of Mary. Crowley promised that he would bring her back from the dead.
I thought this was an interesting twist, but I really liked Jensen’s acting in this scene. He gives a great argument as to why Samuel should give that up and lead them to Crowley. Samuel eventually decided to help, but not after declining a few more times.
So, they go after Crowley and, wouldn’t you know it, Samuel double-crossed them. Meg became subject of an interrogation, Castiel was removed due to a spell, and the brothers were locked up. This is where Dean promised to kill Samuel if he ever saw him again.
I thought that was great. The Campbells have been nothing but trouble this season, and Dean’s determined promise was pretty satisfying. So, they took Dean to a room where two demons were going to kill him, but Sam came to help.
He started sucking his own blood, but it turned out to be a spell to destroy the demon guards. He then went to save Dean, who actually gave a pretty good fight this time. They then went to save Meg and take down Crowley.
They get him into a trap and try to get him to give Sam’s soul back. He tells them that he can’t. Meg tries to kill him, but he gets the better of her. This is where Castiel returns with Crowley’s remains and tells him to give Sam’s soul back or else.
Crowley reiterates something that was said earlier in the episode about Sam’s soul. Castiel told Dean that Lucifer has had Sam’s soul down in the cage with him for over a year and that the soul is most likely very damaged. He told him that Sam would have serious mental issues and other complications.
That turn was another interesting little twist. It seems right that something would be wrong with his soul after being locking inside a cage with the devil. Anyway, after Crowley mentions those points, Castiel burns his remains and gets rid of Crowley.
Crowley was an interesting bad guy. He was funny and pretty easy to hate. He may have had his bones burned, but we may not have seen the end of him. Castiel also showed that you don’t want to mess with him. He took out Crowley like it was nothing.
The episode ends with Sam telling Dean that they should stop looking for his soul. Dean tries again and again to convince Sam otherwise, but Sam just walks away.
The ending was rather stupid. Why is he leaving? Where is he going? The brothers have had their differences, and have even split up, but not over something like this. They have been working together all season, why might they stopping now? Obviously the previews showed them working together, so the ending made even less sense.
Anyway, besides that ending, the rest of the episode was top notch. There was a lot happening this week and a lot to think about. We have seen both extremes of soulless sam now. The comedic one from last episode, and the absolute serious one from this episode. In practically every scene he took control and told Dean how they were going to do something.
I still think I like the comedic one better, but I actually kind of liked the confident, dead serious one as well. Castiel was great again, as he still continues to try and figure out humans. He comes across porn and the next few minutes were hilarious. He even used a move he saw on Meg.
A few very interesting twists, great acting from Jensen, some great comedy throughout, and some great drama really made this episode another standout in season six. I still can’t decide if this is the best episode or the second best of the season. It definitely would have been if it wasn’t for that ending. It still doesn’t make sense. Well, either way, great episode.

Yep, all is well with the boys. Would like to see more of Crawley, though and I love Soulless Sam.
I really got out of touch with this show but it sounds like its still interesting. I’ll have to see if i can get the seasons on DVD this may be worth watching after all.
Hey, thanks for the updates on Supernatural. My schedule doesn’t allow me to watch the show so it’s nice to keep in touch with what’s going on. Keep up the good work!
