PURE SPRING
Linda Peckham
for Rachel Carson and Uncle Carson
on his death at 91
last forsythia
near the barn by Ludlow Creek
aching branches splayed
lonely blossom lifts
gold against the thunderous
pink magnolia sky

I love how “barn by Ludlow Creek” plays off of “lonely blossom lifts”… both in rhythm and in sound. Shows a real love for and attention to the music of words. It reminds me of the way Roethke paid attention to sound.
Tender and lovely!
