Bob Trezise
The sun has set on a clear night.
The sky rivers of blues, yellows, oranges and reds
Drain from the basin of space.
But after a half an hour
The night sky is not yet completely black.
It is Mediterranean lagoons or Greek moss in color
As if a turquoise light was left intentionally on,
For just a few extra minutes,
Behind a black veil.
The stars still snap their way out like buttons.
The floors of the skyscrapers,
From bottom to top,
Still click to life.
The traffic lights take on new authority.
But there still lingers that color in the sky,
So subtle and clean
One can nearly hear it like a distant bugle on a hill.
In fact, that sky, like a clam shell
Pried open,
Holds a pearl, the dome of the state capitol
Lit
By spotlights
From the corners of Michigan Avenue,
Until it closes
And the true night is upon us.
