The new shows this season have been rather mixed. While there have been a few outstanding dramas, the comedies have been lackluster, to say the least.
There is not one show that stands out from the crowd at all. Last year, there was Raising Hope, and the year before, there was Modern Family. So, it is unfortunate that this year has not produced a great new comedy.
However, if any of them come close, it would be New Girl. It is not great and is not hilarious, but it provides some good laughs and likeable characters.
The show is about a woman, Jess, played by Zooey Deschanel, who moves in with three men. Before I get into them, I did have major issues with this premise. While it has worked, I have to question the thoughts on this.
Why would a single woman want to live with three single men? If it was one guy, that wouldn’t be a problem, but it is kind of awkward to have this dynamic. However, many laughs have come from the fact that she is the only woman in the apartment.
So, the three men are Nick, played by Jake Johnson, Schmidt, played by Max Greenfield, and Winston, played by Lamorne Morris.
The part that makes this show work is the fact that the three guys are funny. I knew that Zooey would do her awkward and cutesy thing, and that has been pretty good, but the show kind of hinders on the guys.
These actors have not been on much, so for them to be three fourths of the main cast with a seasoned actress in Deschanel was something of a concern.
However, they are funny and the chemistry between the leads is good as well. Now, this week’s episode was about thanksgiving. Justin Long guest starred as a possible boyfriend of Jess, named Paul.
The funny thing is that he is just as weird and awkward as Jess. He did pretty well in this episode and I wouldn’t mind seeing him again. Anyway, Jess invited him over for thanksgiving, but things did not go as planned.
The guys usually don’t celebrate the holiday, as they go to Best Buy for black Friday, so they tried to get dinner prepared. This episode also featured Cece, played by Hannah Simone, who is a model and friend of Jess.
In the last episode, Schmidt tried to pursue her, which ended with them holding hands in bed, and in this episode, he invited her over for thanksgiving, and she ended up pursuing him.
He is very strict about cooking, and he got angry with her when she shoved mashed potatoes in his face. However, she like that and wanted him to get angry again.
I thought it was funny that he wouldn’t get mad at her again. As for the rest of the day, it was a disaster.
They tried cooking the turkey in a dryer, which ended up with the whole apartment going up in smoke, Paul overheard Jess saying she wanted to sleep with him, and when they went next door to get away from the smoke, they found that the woman living there was dead.
This was a pretty good episode, although having everything go wrong has been done many times before. Like I said, this show is not great, but it does have likeable characters and provides laughs.
In the midst of this mediocre season of comedies, I definitely recommend New Girl.
