Jesus Christ rocks in a new book by Michigan State University Professor of History and Religion David Stowe. In his new book “No Sympathy For the Devil: Christian Pop Music and the Transformation of American Evangelicalism” he tracks the cultural influence of Christian rock. In an interview with Larry Cosentino in the Lansing City Pulse Stowe makes the case that Christian rock helped keep boomers connected to churches. Gosh, and I thought it was Little Latin Lupe Lu. He also charts the influences of Dylan, Stevie Wonder and Johnny Cash who he says were all players in the Christian evangelical movement. Elvis-so-so.
From Stowe’s take on the far reaching influence of Christian rock it looks like we also can blame it for Reaganomics and the Christian Evangelical movement. Thank god, a Madonna put and end to that. Stowe will be bringing his ”travelling salvation show” to EVERYbody Reads Bookstore 7 p.m., Thursday July 21.
