Hawaii Five-0 is shaping up to be a good, fun cop show. The fact that it is a remake wasn’t necessarily a good sign, but I have enjoyed it so far. The show is about a special task force that investigates crimes.
The show stars Alex O’Loughlin as Steve McGarret, a former Navy SEAL who took on the role of leading the task force after his father was murdered, Steve Caan as Danny “Dano†Williams, who is second in command and provides a lot of funny banter with Steve.
Daniel Dae Kim plays Chin Ho Kelly, who is a former cop that was wrongfully accused of corruption, but is reinstated by his old friend Steve. Last but not least, Grace Park plays Chin’s cousin Kono Kalakaua, a new cop that decided to join her cousin in the task force.
In this week’s episode, an ambassador’s daughter is found dead, while his other one has been kidnapped. The governor tasks the team of finding the daughter and getting her back alive.
There has been an ongoing storyline where Steve has his dad’s toolbox, which has a lot of information regarding something he was investigating, and now Steve has taken that over. However, his sister, who showed up in last week’s episode, found it and I am interested to see how this plays out.
I think the reason why this show works is because of the cast, the setting, and the action.
The main four characters are all likeable and fun to watch. It is great to see Daniel Dae Kim once again, as he has just finished Lost last year. That guy must be very happy getting to work in Hawaii all the time.
Anyway, Kono has been used as bait a lot in the early episodes, but she can kick some serious butt. At first, I thought Steve had come off as very arrogant and rude, but he has certainly changed and become a fine lead.
As I said earlier, Dano provides some great banter with Steve. In this episode, Steve was using some high tech equipment that Dano was impressed with. Steve then went on to say that it was the Internet and that everyone uses it. Dano replied by telling him that he only plays Ms. Pacman.
The setting for this show is wonderful. Hawaii is gorgeous and the show has utilized much of it so far. The show has involved the Hawaiian gangs, the local high school football team, and they always show a lot of scenery, which is great.
The action is also very good. Unlike Undercovers, this show does not lag at all and the fight scenes have been top-notch.
This show is not revolutionary in any way. However, when you add in all those things that I have just mentioned, along with the great theme song, it makes for a fun Monday night.

Hey, even though I don’t watch this as I just can’t find the time to watch everything, this was my favorite review. Weird. Always did like the old Hawaii 5-0, but just no time for another cop show. Thanks.
“Last but not least, Grace Kelly plays Chin’s cousin Kono Kalakaua…”
That’s Grace Park, btw.
Thanks Jordan. It has been corrected.
