Wayne Pacelle, the controversial head of the United States Humane Society, will be in Lansing tomorrow (Sunday August 7) to promote his first book “The Bond: Our Kinship with Animals, Our Call to Defend Them”. Watch Pacelle talk about his 100 city tour here.
Pacelle will visit EVERYbody Reads bookstore, 2019, East Michigan Avenue from 2-4 p.m. to discuss his book and answer questions. His book examines the unique bond between animals and humans and how despite that bond humans have inflicted what he calls “systematic cruelty” against animals.
He will have no shortage of topics since the Humane Society recently offered a $2500 reward in Lansing for information relating to incidences of dog fighting. In addition, an MSU student was recently bound over to stand trial for 13 felonies in the serial killing of 13 dogs.
When Pacelle became CEO of the Human Society more than seven years ago, he transformed it from an organization that was mostly known for rescuing dogs and cats to one that became the leading political voice for all animals. He also applied some very sophisticated marketing and political savvy enabling the Society to be the major force in numerous State Ballot issues banning various forms of animal cruelty especially in the area of factory farms. In 2006, the Humane Society was largely responsible for the repeal of dove hunting in Michigan.
Most recently he joined hands with convicted dog-fighting participant and football star Michael Vick to speak out against animal cruelty, even supporting Vick in his quest to get another dog much to the chagrin of animal rights activists.
Recently, Vick and Pacelle appeared together in front of Congressional Committee to speak in favor of criminalizing spectators at a dog fight. Watch the video here.
The Society has definitely spread their wings under Pacelle’s leadership and now is just as likely to promote meatless eating to turning off the lights at night to protect birds.
