Jennifer Otto of Lansing Michigan loves chick lit and thinks chickens are funny. So do a lot of the younger readers she provides books to as the head of the Reading is Fundamental (RIF) for Lansing. Otto said that last year, nearly 200 volunteers working with Lansing RIF provided more than 36,000 free books to Lansing school children of all ages. Here’s a few of her recommendations for younger readers who she says like books with chickens in them and by the way Leslie Helakowski is from Michigan.
Skippy Jones by Judy Schachner
Rosie’s Walk by Pat Hutchins
Chicks and Salsa by Aaron Reynolds
The Little Red Hen- illustrated by Jerry Pinkney
Big Chickens Fly the Coop Leslie Helakoski
Big Chickens by Leslie Helakoski
Henny Penny by Paul Galdone
The Rain Came Down by David Shannon
Chickens Dance by Tammi Sauer
Reading is Fundamental is cooperating with Macy’s across the country to help assure our youth have the books they need to be good readers. If you give three dollars to RIF Macys will give you a $10 off one purchase of $50 or more.
Macy’s will then donate $1 locally; $1 to RIF’s multicultural campaign and $1 to purchase reading resources nationally. Learn more about the program by visiting Book a Bright Future. The program runs June 1-July 30.
Hi Bill,
Thanks for the great post about Lansing RIF and Book a Brighter Future!
Cammie Backus, RIF (Washington, DC)
Great article Bill - and thanks for the RIF plugs!!
Thank you so much for this posting of both the chick lit list and the plug for Book a Brighter Future!
Thks Cammie
I got a tour recently of the RIF warehouse and was impressed by the range of offerings. This is one of the best programs Lansing offers to young readers. I plan on doing a list for young adult readers also.
