Scott Sparling grew in Jackson, Michigan, in an era when the creative kids believed that success required moving away. He now lives in Washington state, but he relied on his memories of Michigan for his first-ever book of fiction, Wire to Wire.
In the first video below, Sparling opens with a summary of the book, perhaps best described as a noirish deconstruction of a crime novel. (Click here to visit his website, which captures the mood and spirit of the book.) Train aficionados will especially want to watch the end of the second video, where he talks about hopping trains in his youth.
The interview by Randall Glumm with Bill Castanier took place at Everybody Reads in Lansing on Monday, July 26, 2011.
