After the past few episodes, I was worried that this season was going downhill. Not that they were bad, in fact they were pretty good, but they were not anywhere near the great standalone episodes of seasons past.
However, we got a great comedic episode this week that featured two Buffy stars. James Marsters, Don Stark, and Charisma Carpenter, Maggie Stark, play a married couple who have recently split.
Don is a wealthy philanthropist and developer while Maggie is an artist. They are both witches and the brothers find out that Maggie has been killing people around town lately.
We got to see some unique and interesting deaths this week. One woman died in a salon, while a man’s nailgun shot at him by itself. Anyway, the couple split due to Don having an affair with Wendy, the woman who died at the salon.
He also has a close relationship with his assistant, Jenny. So, Maggie goes after her next. The brothers manage to save her and she tells them that nothing is going on between them.
After a confrontation between Don and Maggie about the affair and the brother’s investigation, Maggie uses her powers to break Don’s bust, which is located just outside the local community center.
At this point, things turn ugly. Don decides to ruin her art exhibit by melting her paintings. Before they kill themselves, the brothers intervene and try a spell, which didn’t do anything.
In typical fashion, they improvise and try to counsel the couple. This was a hilarious scene where they tried to analyze the issues, but the witches continued to throw them around and Maggie even sent a swarm of bees on Dean.
It ended with them reconciling and things turned out fine. Except, there are these monsters called leviathans. Yeah, we haven’t seen them in a few episodes, but they were back this week, although briefly.
The same one we saw a few weeks ago, Chet, had found the brothers, and at the end, before he kills them, Don casts a spell on him.
The episode ends with another useless conversation between the brothers that goes nowhere. If Dean just told him about Amy, then they can get past this issue.
I will be done complaining about this, but just for the record, I wish this was just dealt with so that they can move on.
Overall, though, this was a great standalone episode. Seeing the Buffy stars again was neat and there were a few hilarious moments in this episode that were typical from these types of standalone hunts.
We did not get much into the leviathans again, but this is usually where the hunting episodes get going. I hope all of them are as fun as this one was.
