The Lansing Capital Area District Library is presenting several special events at the Downtown Lansing branch in honor of Black History and Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
On Friday, Jan. 13 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 14 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., the exhibit Necessary! from The Black History 101 Mobile Museum will be on display in downtown Lansing. Necessary! focuses on the legacy of revolutionary leader Malcolm X, featuring over 150 historical artifacts from Malcolm X’s life and work, including rare photographs, magazine covers, and relics of racism from America’s past. Malcolm X lived in Lansing Michigan and nearby Mason through his teen years. Read more here. Last year, historian Manning Marable wrote a comprehensive biography of the slain civil rights leader.
Special events also include the program Malcolm X and Hip Hop, presented by hip hop legend Professor Griff of Public Enemy. He will speak on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 11 a.m. about the importance of lost chapters of Malcolm X to the hip hop community. Other events on that day include a performance by Shabazz Academy African Dancers and Drum Group at 1:00 p.m. and a Black History Storytime for children at 2 p.m

There is a sign post just like this in Harlem. It’s nice to see that Lansing has one now as well, but Harlem did it at W. 125th and I believe 7th ave (Lennox –sp? Ave.). It’s so perfectly symbolic–I love it too
