“If our society is a beast, it’s belly is the prison system.” That’s the contention of Insurgent Theatre’s new, original production of “In the Belly,” which makes a stop in mid-Michigan on Wednesday, October 19, 2011, at 8 p.m. at Art Alley, 1133 S. Washington Avenue, in Lansing. Doors will open at 7 p.m. Admission is free. The Peace Education Center is hosting the event.
According to Insurgent Theatre’s production notes, the play “seeks to manifest imprisonment on stage, overlays it with critical analysis of the system, and follows up with in-depth discussion about abolishing prison in America.” We predict the play will be intimate, intense and challenging for the audience — much like the troupe’s visit to Lansing in 2009 with the production of its original play, “Ulysses’ Crewmen.”
Insurgent Theatre will be touring Michigan this week with additional performances in Detroit, Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids, and Kalamazoo. At each stop during the tour, donations will be accepted for Redbird Prison Abolition, a prison abolitionist group based out of Ohio.
