Happy Halloween everyone! To celebrate the holiday, I have decided to review a few horror shows currently on TV. Hope you enjoy them and hopefully you all have a great and safe Halloween.
Grimm (Pilot)
I have two good shows for you here, but this one is not one of them. This is a horror show on NBC that tries to be a horror movie, but I did not really like it.
It begins with a girl being attacked by what seemed like a werewolf. It then goes to the main character, Nick Burkhardt (David Giutoli), who is a cop.
He is actually one of the last remaining members of the Grimm family, an elite line of criminal profilers who try to keep balance between humanity and the mythological creatures of the world.
After he finds this out, he tries to keep it from his fiancé, Juliette Silverton (Bitsie Tulloch) and his partner, Hank Griffin (Russell Hornsby).
I don’t have a whole lot more to say because this was not really that good. It was kind of boring and did not have anything scary in it.
Well, actually, Nick was seeing people who kept having these monster-like faces and it is part of his role. He is supposed to see people for who they really are.
So, when he sees people with these faces, then that must mean they are monsters. Anyway, this was a mediocre pilot that was more bland than it should have been for a horror series pilot.
If you want some good horror pilots, check out the pilots of the next two shows I am going to review.
American Horror Story (Halloween, Pt. 1)
This show is weird, entertaining, thrilling, and crazy. I really don’t know whether this is a great show or just an entertaining one.
Either way, it doesn’t really matter because I love watching it. No show on TV flies faster than this one.
This FX horror show, from the creator of Glee, is about a family who moves into a haunted house.
It may seem like a terrible premise, but it really isn’t. The husband, Ben Harmon (Dylan McDermott), psychiatrist, had an affair and his wife, Vivien (Connie Britton), and him decided that a move would help them.
So far, it has not helped one bit. The mistress, Hayden (Kate Mara) was pregnant, but was killed in the last episode.
She was killed by a man who had killed his entire family in the house that the Harmon family is living in. He has this gruesome injury from the fire he lit in the house.
He keeps harassing Ben and telling him he owes him money or else he will tell everyone about Hayden.
The married couple has a daughter, Violet (Taissa Farmiga), who is dating a weird young man, Tate Langdom (Evan Peters), who is a patient of her fathers.
Vivien and Ben have been trying to sell the house since a break-in occurred in the second episode. However, they have had no luck, considering the history of the house.
Each episode has begun with some death that has occurred there. This week, a gay couple who owned the house was killed by a man in 2010.
The craziest things in the series have occurred with the dead people. In this episode, the couple hired a gay man to help decorate the house better in order to help sell it.
However, they actually hired the gay couple that died last year. Plus, at the end of the episode, the mistress who was killed last week showed up at the door.
Did I mention that this show is crazy and weird? That isn’t even the craziest part. There is this mother, Constance (Jessica Lange) and daughter, Addy (Jamie Brewer) who live next to the family.
Addy has Down syndrome and Constance is a really creepy person. At one point in her life, she found her husband sleeping with the maid of the house that the Harmons own.
She kills both of them, but the maid is still around. What is even stranger is that most people see the maid as this old lady with a messed up eye, but Ben sees her as this sexy young woman who is seducing him all the time.
Towards the end of the episode, Addy is trick-or-treating and gets run over by a car and dies. However, she will probably come back, as does every other dead person on this show.
I honestly don’t know what to think about this show. If you did not understand what I have been talking about, join the club because neither do I.
This show does not make a whole lot of sense. However, with all the crazy unbelievable things that happen, this show is highly entertaining.
It is spooky and dramatic and the acting is great. It may not be the best show out there, but I love watching this insane show. It is one of the best new shows and one of the best horror shows I have seen.
The Walking Dead (Save the Last One)
Sunday is the best night of TV. There is just no comparison from the rest of the week.
Five of the best dramas are all on Sunday. Dexter, The Good Wife, Boardwalk Empire, Homeland, and AMC’s Zombie drama, The Walking Dead.
The horror show is based off of a series of comics and it was produced by Frank Darabont. However, he left the show in between season one and two.
It is currently in its second season and it is really getting good. The series follows a group of survivors who are basically just trying to stay alive in this cruel apocalyptic zombie world.
The leader of the group is Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), a police officer. He has a wife, Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies), and a son, Carl (Chandler Riggs)
His partner, Shane (Jon Bernthal), has been quite the character. In the beginning of the series, Rick is by himself at a hospital. We come to find out that while he was there, Shane had told everyone that he was dead.
So, as any great friend would do, he began having an affair with Lori. Now, I don’t really fault them, because they thought Rick was dead, but Shane has wanted to continue it since they found out Rick as alive. In fact, he almost raped her in the finale of season one.
There is a lot more to say about Shane, but let me recap this week’s episode.
So, this season has had two major stories. The first one is that Carl was shot by a hunter in the premiere.
Rick took him to a farm, which happened to have a doctor there.
Last week, Shane and the man who shot him, Otis, who is an overweight man, went to a nearby school to get supplies for the young kid.
This week was great, as they were trapped by zombies for much of the episode. It was very intense and there was a lot of great action.
The other main story this year is that a young girl, Sophia, went missing. This also happened in the premiere.
These two events have led the group to stop and stay in the area while they take care of Carl and while they look for Sophia.
Although last week’s episode was slow, this week’s episode was fantastic. There was some great drama between Rick and Lori.
While no parent would want their child dead, the discussions between them about allowing Carl to never have to grow up in that type of world was great.
In the end, though, Shane showed up with the supplies, and Carl was saved.
However, Otis was killed, and the way it happened was one of the most shocking things on TV all season.
As I mentioned, Shane has been kind of a jerk during the series. Well, none of it compares to what happened at the end of this episode.
While they were trapped at the school, Otis decided to distract the zombies so that Shane could jump out a window.
It worked out great, except Shane hurt his leg. After meeting back up with Otis, the two of them try to outrun the zombies.
However, they had too far to go, and with his leg the way it was, Shane made a horrible decision.
Did you notice how I mentioned that Otis was overweight? Well, what this meant was that the zombies had a good chance of catching up to them before they could get back to the car.
So, Shane shot Otis in the leg, took the supplies, and left him there for the zombies to devour.
That image is one that will stay with me for weeks. I was shocked and mad and kind of understood the whole time.
His decision to sacrifice Otis was wrong and although I can see the other side of it, I think he did it for selfish reasons.
Some may say he did it to ensure that he could get the supplies to Carl, but I don’t think so.
At the beginning and end of the episode, Shane is shown shaving his head and then giving a sinister look into the mirror.
Given the types of things we have seen from him thus far, his decision at the school was to save himself.
It was never about Carl and if it was, then he would have sacrificed himself or taken his chances with Otis. In my opinion, it may be understandable, but it was evil.
Shane is becoming one of the most chilling characters on TV and at this point, I have no idea what kind of evil things he plans to do next.
However, I do know that this may have been the best episode of any TV show I have seen all season and one of the best in this show’s short history.
This show manages to have great zombie action and some of the best drama on TV. If you are looking for a great drama with some horror involved, look no further than the Walking Dead.

Very nice! I don’t watch Walking Dead, but maybe should start. Don’t have much time for more shows, I’m afraid and ever since Thriller, by Michael Jackson, came out, zombies have kind of lost their luster with me. Absolutely love American Horror Story. So tired of chop up shows…love the eerie “what will happen next” shows like this.
