Driving home last night, I was dazzled by my neighbor’s Christmas lights. So I stopped tonight to take a few photos. Love the vivid colors. But I still cannot figure out how they project those designs against the side of the house. Magic?
As long as I was out at night freezing my ever-expanding tuchus, I figured I would prowl around the area in search of Christmas lights worth shooting. I first headed to the richest neighborhood I could think of, the same as you do on Halloween when you are hunting for the good stuff. A number of the starter-castles in Hiawatha Lakes were decorated so tastefully that I wasn’t sure we were in America. What, no Santas? No candy canes?
Further down, off Jolly Road, I found this wonderfully simple creche made of lights. And I also found myself hoping that no one would shoot me thinking I was a robber creeping up on their house.
I really like the inflatable penguin.
These snowmen (and snowdog?) look like they are wandering aimlessly across the lawn.
As I headed home, I stopped to capture this Grinch on Okemos Road south of 96. Since this is their only Christmas decoration, I found myself wondering whether they are sending a message – stay away? Ho ho no?

Years ago, in another century, as a reporter for the weekly, Ingham County News I used to photograph Christmas displays for the Christmas issue. I put it off to the last possible pre-publication time, every year. Dogs barked, homeowners yelled. I was relieved when an energy crisis limited the displays and the paper’s coverage. (I was taking black and white photos!)
Shirley, I love those memories. I did have a little dog go ballistic, but I never saw a homeowner. I did not head out until 9:30, which was quite late. I still think I am lucky I wasn’t shot. Thanks for posting.
